NRG - 30 years of excellence

Earlier this year NRG turned 30! So how did we get here?

NRG as a business started in February 1988, of course the exact date isn’t important now but I think it was the 18th or 23rd. It might not be obvious these days, but this well worn man was once a young mechanic, full of enthusiasm and ready to take on any challenge! Those who know me will attest that I’m pretty much the same now really, just with even less hair... Running a business for 30 years will do that to you!

In those warm days at the end of February in ‘88 I had just finished ‘my time’ as an apprentice and was raring to go it alone. So much so, that I didn’t let the fact that I did not yet physically have my ‘ticket’ in hand slow me down and I bought a local business called MS Motors at Denistone Autoport. I quickly set up my new shop and the first job I did trading as ‘NRG Automotive Services’ was a front handbrake cable in a XE Falcon cab. This was a common problem on those cars and the shop was at a Taxi base, so I had some work with the taxis to fill my time as I worked to build the business. The business took off quite quickly and I could no longer continue single handed after the first few months, so I looked at 1st year apprentices to help with the workload as well as giving something back to the industry. Over the years NRG has helped a few different lads work their ticket, including Jerry who‘s stayed with us the longest after qualifying.

Of course, the Sydney industrial landscape is always changing and we couldn’t stay put for long. After 2 years Shell took over the servo where we were located and kicked us out, so we moved to the rear of 899 Victoria rd, West Ryde, behind AVIS rent a car and next to the Tom Kerr dealership. We remained there till about 1994, when we upped sticks to 33 Nancarrow ave, Meadowbank, staying put until I bought 5 Mary parade, Rydalmere in 2000 and then in 2008 came to rest just down the road at 30 Antoine street. Some of you might remember those workshops, does anyone have any fond memories to share?

One of ours was when at 899 Victoria rd, at the end of a long day. I was just getting out of a car after a roadtest when something made me look out of the window in time to see a wheel bouncing down the road. Not rolling, but full on bouncing at full chat past the workshop, straight towards Victoria Road! I panicked, thinking it wouldn’t end well… and of course the cops will think it came from the workshop. Luckily it managed to cross all six lanes, missing everything! We later discovered it came from a house up the road where a young boy decided to let his elder brother’s wheel roll down the road while he worked on his car. The young lad is now a customer of ours, you know who you are!

We’ve been lucky in that many of our good customers have come with us on our journey, returning to have us work on their cars (both new and old) and we’ve seen them grow up, have families and we now look after their kids cars as well. We’d like to say a huge thanks to you all for your continued custom, it’s very much appreciated!
